There are two kinds of charging:
- AC charging is slower and cheaper, and covers home wall chargers and many destination chargers at shops, hotels and car parks. You usually bring your own cable.
- DC fast charging is the rapid roadside kind that adds a lot of range in 20 to 40 minutes, costs more per unit, and has its cable attached.
What it actually costs
- Home charging, especially overnight at a cheap night rate, costs a fraction of public fast charging. The car you choose matters far less than where and when you plug it in - our detailed review of Electric Vehicle (EV) Power Plans explains what's on offer.
- Electricity is sold per kilowatt-hour (kWh). An EV uses between 15 and 22 kWh to travel 100km. The calculator below works out what 100km costs you when charging at home on a night rate and at a public fast charger, compared with what the same distance costs in a petrol car.
- People debate over which EV to buy more than they think about how they will charge it, when that is the decision that actually controls their running costs. Charge at home on a good night rate makes an EV genuinely cheap to run.
- However, if you rely on public fast chargers and give most of that saving back, and use the most expensive remote chargers, you are not far from the cost of petrol for the distance you'll get per dollar spent. Our view is simple - sort how you will charge an EV first, then choose the car.

Our View: Home charging and a power plan offering a cheap overnight rate are the proven ways to achieve the lowest EV running costs. We see public fast charging as an occasional convenience for road trips, but it's not cost-effective for ongoing charging. A leading EV plan night rate does more to lower your running costs than which EV you buy. And if you cannot charge at home at all, it's arguable that the running-cost case for an EV is much weaker.

Public Charging Networks in New Zealand
The public network is a patchwork of operators, each with its own app, pricing and coverage. You will usually need the operator's app to start a charge, though a few take contactless. The prices below are indicative and often change, so we link to each operator for current rates.

ChargeNet (DC + AC, nationwide)
- Overview: New Zealand's largest fast-charging network, more than 520 charge points, is now majority-owned by Genesis Energy and expanding fast with government backing
- Coverage: Nationwide, across main highways and urban centres, including hyper-rapid hubs at select locations such as Bombay, Taupō, Kaiwaka, Rotorua and Bulls
- Speed: 50kW rapid up to 300kW hyper-rapid (older CHAdeMO connectors up to 62kW)
- How you pay: ChargeNet app, RFID fob, or automatic start on compatible cars
- Pricing: Indicative DC roughly $0.60 to $0.95/kWh, some remote sites around $1.15 per kWh
- Watch for: Idle fees once your car finishes charging per this announcement, so move it promptly

- Overview: Meridian's network, 400-plus charge points and growing, matched to 100% certified renewable energy and open to any driver, not just Meridian customers

- Jolt: Auckland, 25kW DC, on a free-then-paid model, so watch the cost once you pass the free allowance
- Plug and Save: North Island DC, and one of the few that accepts contactless payment as well as an app
- Hikotron: AC chargers, mainly in the Waikato, aimed at commercial drivers

- Thundergrid: a small selection of chargers in the Wellington region

- Service or per-minute fees: Some networks charge these, which makes a small top-up far more expensive per kWh than a full charge
- Tesla extras: Congestion fees at busy sites, and a higher rate for non-Tesla cars
How to Find an EV Charger
We do not run our own map, because the live data is best left to the tools built for it. The most useful EV charging maps and location tools are:

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it cheaper to charge at home or at a public station?
Home, by a wide margin, and cheaper still overnight on a night rate. Public DC fast charging typically costs three to six times the home off-peak rate, so it is best kept for road trips rather than everyday use.
How much does it cost to charge an EV in New Zealand?
It depends entirely on where you charge. At a cheap night rate, an EV can cost only a few dollars per 100km, while a public fast charger can be several times that. Use the calculator above with your own rates to see the figure for your situation.
Do I need an app to use public chargers?
Usually yes - most networks need their own app or an RFID fob to start a charge. A few sites accept contactless payment, but the app is the norm, so set up accounts for the networks near you in advance.
