Know This First: Every vehicle and driver is different, which is why it's impossible to say what car insurer is "best". We believe our car insurance comparison is the most comprehensive price information currently available and a good starting point. That being said, comparing multiple providers is the only way to save.
Our Thoughts on Policies and Pricing:
- Only a handful of insurers provide online car insurance quotes, which we feel is disappointing for price transparency.
- Most of the insurers listed below only provide quotes in-person or over the phone. This makes comparing more time-consuming.
- As a result, we have not priced tested or looked at the dozens of policies for any in-person insurance company. We believe the online car insurance market is very competitive and, in many cases, will be more affordable than bank and broker-sold insurance (when your needs are typical rather than non-standard).
- For this reason, we suggest arranging quotes from a selection of everyday insurers (AMI, Tower, State, AA etc) first. Our policy comparison has more details.

Everyday Car Insurers (Online Quotes Available)
Most New Zealanders chose an established provider like AMI, Tower and AA Insurance when insuring their car. The companies compete vigorously to attract new customers, which is why comparing policies is an almost certain way to save money. Our AMI vs Tower vs AA vs State and more guide has further details, and you can buy policies from any of the companies listed below online.

Manufacturer Car Insurance
Most car manufacturers offer insurance alongside car finance and leasing offers. If you're buying a new car, manufacturer car insurance can provide complete protection beyond accidents. For example, some policies combine comprehensive cover with Mechanical Breakdown Insurance and breakdown cover.
If you've paid by finance, insurance costs can be added to your vehicle credit contract. Some manufacturer car insurance offers new for old replacements using genuine manufacturers parts and a promise of replacement if the vehicle is written off within three years of the date of purchase.
Manufacturer dealerships are usually negotiable on a lot of add-ons; insurance can be one of them. The best way to get a benchmark is to get quotes from everyday car insurers, so you have something to compare when talking to the sales team.
