Know this first: All the prices quoted above are for 24-month plans. When comparing broadband providers, service setup charges are an essential part of the deal. In the case of Farmside, the installation cost will depend on the type of broadband technology used – the choices are ADSL/VDSL, RBI (4G/5G Rural Wireless), Urban Wireless, and Fibre. The differences in cost are quite significant:
- Connection cost: The connection cost depends on the type of broadband you select. There is no cost for 4G/5G wireless (other than the postage of the router), if required, a standard installation costs $199, non-standard installation costs $299, plus travel costs. This page lists all of Farmside’s fees.
- Modem cost: There is no cost for the modem in ADSL, VDSL or Fibre plans, you just need to pay a postage fee of $20.
- Exit Fees: An early disconnection fee applies, depending on when you exit the contract. It can range from $20 to $265, as outlined in Farmside’s Broadband T&C’s.
- Discounts: Farmside sometimes offers deals for customers that bill their services through Farmside’s Billing Partners: Farmlands, FarmSource, PGG Wrightson or RuralCo.
- Data Cap: If you are on a capped wireless plan and have reached your limit, you can purchase a data booster, or contact Farmside to see if a higher or unlimited plan is available at your address.
- Add-ons: If you are on a plan that includes a VOIP (voice over internet) homeline, national homeline-to-homeline calls are free. You can purchase mobile calling packs and additional features, the prices depend on your broadband plan. You can check the prices for the corresponding plan: ADSL plan, VDSL Plan, Fibre plan, Rural Wireless Plan.
- Farmside services are not available in some areas of New Zealand. You can check broadband availability by calling the Farmside team on 0800 327 674 (Option 1) and they will assess the best option(s) available at your address.
- Farmside also has Urban Wireless plans, which we have not included here because they tend to have the same rates as those offered by One NZ, you can find our review of those plans in Moneyhub's One NZ Broadband review.

Which Farmside Broadband Plan is the Best?
Not all plans offered by Farmside are available throughout New Zealand. However, it is our opinion that the plan that offers the best price/value ratio is the Fibre Broadband Unlimited plan. If a fibre connection is not available at your location, then our suggestion is opting for the RBI Wireless Broadband, and if that’s not suitable then you could go for the ADSL/VDSL Broadband Unlimited plan. If you need a homeline, all of those plans have an "& phone" option.
Choosing the Right Farmside Plan - ADSL/VDSL vs RBI vs Fibre
To determine which plan best suits your needs, consider the following specifications and features:
1. Connection Speed: In general terms:
2. Flexibility:
3. Set-Up Charges:
4. Monthly Costs: If you live in a remote area of New Zealand you may not have much control over which plan to join, as you will have to choose from the options available at your location. However, as a general rule, you should favour plans in the following order: Fibre, RBI (wireless), VDSL, ADSL.
1. Connection Speed: In general terms:
- ADSL/VDSL Plans offer adequate connection speed for families, couples, and individuals with basic/moderate needs including checking email, reading news, watching YouTube videos, light video streaming from services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+ etc and browsing the web.
- RBI Wireless (4G) Plans overall, these plans offer similar speeds than their ADSL/VDSL counterparts but their setup is much easier. So, depending on the strength of the wireless signal, you can expect similar results when streaming videos and browsing the web.
- RBI Wireless (5G) Plans typically offer speeds comparable to Fibre, if you are in an area of good coverage. 5G is still quite new to rural areas, so availability is limited.
- Fibre Plans are the go-to option for enjoying 4k video streaming, high-quality audio streaming, VoIP services, content creation, gaming, and more.
2. Flexibility:
- Given the nature of the plans offered by Farmside, most of them require contracting the service for a minimum period of 24 months. There is also an open term option, which adds $10 to the monthly cost of your plan, and usually you will need to purchase a modem outright to use for the service from Farmside. They offer the option of purchasing a brand new one at full cost, or a second-hand modem at a reduced cost.
3. Set-Up Charges:
- The total cost for equipment and installation of broadband service depends largely on the type of technology used. Some types of connections only have a $20 set up fee, whereas if installation is required, installation can cost in the hundreds. Farmside can provide a quote for installation before you proceed.
4. Monthly Costs: If you live in a remote area of New Zealand you may not have much control over which plan to join, as you will have to choose from the options available at your location. However, as a general rule, you should favour plans in the following order: Fibre, RBI (wireless), VDSL, ADSL.
