Polytechnics and Technology Institutes
Polytechnics and Technology Institutes offer a practical style of learning and smaller class sizes. Unlike university education, many of the courses are aimed at giving you the skills to take on a specific job at the end of the course. Polytechnics and Technology Institutes operate all over New Zealand, and offer a range of qualifications - from a certificate (NZQA Level 3 and 4) to a degree (NZQA Level 7).

NZ Police
For anyone looking for a career that is never boring, working as a police officer is a great opportunity. Above all, you’ll help people in your community as well as constantly use your judgement, make decisions, build community networks, and instil confidence in those around you. It’s a popular profession, and applicants above 17 years of age are being accepted.
Do I need to study at university or do a course to work as a police officer? Anyone over 17 can apply, and if you’re accepted, you can start Police College if you’re over 18. There are no tertiary education requirements.
Training: Police College is 16 weeks, and you’re paid to train – all the details are explained here.
Starting salary: Over $40,000 per year – more benefits are outlined here.
Working times: Being a police officer involves working shifts, usually 6:30am to 3:30pm, 1:30pm to 11:30pm and 10:30pm to 6:30am
Entry requirements: To be a police officer, you’ll first need to be accepted into the Royal New Zealand Police College (RNZPC). This entry and training guide outlines what you need to demonstrate.
