What is my net worth?
‘Net Worth’ is defined as the total value of your assets (property, investments and your bank balance, etc.) less your liabilities (mortgage, loans and other debts).
Any asset you own needs to be included, even if it would take some time to convert to cash. Your assets include your home and property, KiwiSaver, trust benefits, shares/investments, term deposits, your vehicles and anything else.
Liabilities tend to be easier work out due to the fact they’re debts – anyone you owe money to (mortgage lender, credit card provider, car finance, etc.) needs to be included.

What are assets and liabilities?
Not everyone speaks ‘accountant’, so we’ve summarised assets and liabilities in plain English:
- Assets: Assets include cash items (i.e. everyday bank account, KiwiSaver funds, term deposits) and non-cash items (i.e. vehicles, property and shares) which you could sell for cash.
- Liabilities: Liabilities are debts. Anyone you owe money to is a liability. New Zealanders’ most common liabilities tend to be their mortgage, credit card balances, student loans and car finance. If you own a home, its current value is an asset and the mortgage owed is a liability.
