Wellington Gym Memberships - Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a gym membership cost?
The weekly pricing for a gym varies significantly. At a number of Wellington locations, you can pay anything from $7 to $80+ a week, depending on where you go. Generally, the cheapest weekly deals require the longest fixed-term commitment.
What happens if I quit or cancel the gym membership before my fixed term ends?
If you decide to leave the gym within the fixed term you signed up to, you will likely pay a penalty. This can range from anything to 25% to 90% of the remaining membership fee, so it’s essential to understand this first before signing up. As a gym membership is a credit contract, failing to abide by the terms and conditions can lead to debt collection.
Why are 24/7 gyms so much cheaper than established gyms?
24/7 hour access gyms are usually cheaper because they are often unstaffed during off-peak hours, run with a lower cost base and don’t offer full facilities.
Will I pay more than my weekly gym membership fee?
Quite possibly – please be aware of potential extra fees beyond what you’re quoted. These can include direct debit fees, failed payment fees, joining fees, access card fee, replacement card fee. If in doubt, ask what the total cost will be including all charges.
What happens when my fixed-period gym membership ends?
Your gym contract may require you to give notice to cancel; otherwise you may risk re-renewing for another fixed term period. If in doubt, ask what you need to do (and get the answer in writing, so there’s no confusion).
How do I get the best deal?
The best way is to shop around, participate in some free trials and, if possible, wait for January when gyms offer incentives to capitalize on people’s ‘new year resolution’ intentions. Never take a long-term deal to save money if you don’t think you’ll be able to commit both financially and/or physically. Always ask about the total fees you’ll pay and the cancellation penalties before signing any contract.
