Our Favourite Cards
We list our favourite credit and debit cards that put the customer first with a range of exclusive benefits, savings and entitlements
Updated 17 March 2022
Important: The intention of this guide is not to fill your wallet with shiny new cards. Instead, we suggest considering one or two of the cards below that offer specific benefits unseen in other cards. From earning a healthy amount of Airpoints Dollars to paying close to 0% on foreign currency transactions, our list has you covered.
Disclaimer: This list does not constitute financial advice, and the credit cards listed below are included based on their benefits and fees. No credit card issuer or bank has paid to be on this list, although we may receive payment should you be approved for a card (read our advertising policy for more details). Our guide is journalistic in nature; there is no "best" or "favourite" credit card - this is simply an exercise to raise awareness on the different benefits that different cards deliver. We stand by all the cards listed below and believe they offer the best value in the market with regards to the benefits they offer.
Know this: Generally, we favour cards that are low (or zero) fee and offer benefits that put you first. The exclusion of any credit card below does not mean the card lacks benefits or purpose. Instead, our aim for this guide is to simplify credit cards and display the top-rated cards for a number of purposes.
In this guide, we outline what we consider to be the best offers for a number of different needs:

MoneyHub Founder Christopher Walsh shares his views about the best cards in the market:Banks (arguably) offer credit cards aggressively to their customers, but my view is that these cards don't deliver the value they should. However, there are a handful of cards that stand out. This guide is a summary of those that provide the most and offer you actual value.
Whatever card you decide on, please make sure it's the best for your immediate needs. There's no point getting a card "for later," as you'll either overpay and/or get the wrong benefits. For this reason, we've explained the cards in detail to help your decision-making process. Know This: If you are in any doubt about what you can afford, the best credit card is likely "no credit card". |

Our Favourite Credit Cards (Balance Transfer, Airpoints, Rewards, Cashback and Low-Interest)
We're frustrated with the low level of rewards and cashback offered by banks. We don't think being charged $40+ a year to have a rewards credit card that only gives you a $10 voucher for spending $1,500 to $2,000 is a good deal. Sadly, it is the norm. What is somewhat helpful is the range of balance transfer offers and long-term low-interest rate cards.
Everyone's credit card needs are different, so we've shortlisted five must-consider options to make life cheaper, easier and more rewarding. Our top four credit cards are as follows:
1. Our pick for the best Balance Transfer credit card: The ASB Visa Light Balance Transfer - this card offers 0% interest for six months, zero card fees and attractive interest-free purchase offers. If you're serious about paying off credit card debt in six months, this card is the cheapest way to do it.
2. Our pick for the best Airpoints credit card (most popular): The American Express Airpoints Platinum card - $195/year fee, earn 1 Airpoints Dollar for every $70 spend (the best rate in New Zealand), status points, lounge access and other travel and insurance perks. Bonus offer: 300 bonus Airpoints Dollars when you apply, are approved and spend $1,500 on your new Card within the first 3 months. New Card Members only.
3. Our pick for the best free rewards and benefits credit card (no annual fee card): The American Express Airpoints Card - $0/year fee. Earn $1 of rewards (Airpoints Dollars) for every $100 spent, redeemable at the Airpoints Store (with 6,000+ reward options) or on flights. Bonus Offer: 50 bonus Airpoints Dollars when you apply, are approved and spend $750 on your new Card within the first 3 months. New Card Members only.
4. Our pick for the lowest interest rate credit card: The Kiwibank Low Rate Visa - $30/year fee. This card offers a market-leading 9.95% p.a. interest rate, low card fees and a 1.99% p.a. balance transfer offer. If you don't always pay off your credit card, but have a regular income and don't drag balances, Kiwibank's offer is likely to be the most cost-effective.

Know This:
- You can apply in only a few minutes, and there is no obligation to have a credit card issued.
- MoneyHub suggests that anyone unable to pay off a monthly credit card balance should look for an alternative source of credit. The majority of credit cards charge interest rates that can make repayments challenging to manage.
- Are you looking for something else? Take a look at our must-have Credit Cards list which has a number of our favourite options that offer unbeatable value for money.

Best FREE Credit Card for Chargebacks (when you want the best disputes process should a merchant fail to meet their obligations)Know this: MoneyHub has received a number of complaints from users with Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cards when it comes to organising a chargeback. While fraud is almost always refunded promptly, disputed payments (where a service or product is not delivered or is sub-standard) cause issues. There must be a breach of contract for a chargeback to be successful - if you've paid for something that hasn't been provided or delivered, a chargeback is a sensible step (our chargeback guide has more details).
However, many New Zealanders cite the issue of their bank, which issues the card, being unhelpful and unwilling to rectify the issue. Furthermore, both Visa and Mastercard will rarely assist a customer, instead directing the issue back to the issuing bank. This can cause customer frustration, and end with charges staying on the card. However, unlike Visa and Mastercard, American Express sits outside the banks and deals with customers directly as an issuer. This means that if a customer questions a transaction on their statement, American Express initiates an investigation and will likely contact the merchant to get further information on the transaction. American Express considers the facts and can refund the amount charged. Our Best Card for Chargebacks
You may wish to keep your existing Mastercard or Visa, but for big purchases where you want to be able to deal with the card issuer should something go wrong, the American Express Airpoints Card offers just that. Why we like it? With 50 Airpoints Dollars for signing up, a $0 annual card fee and the ability to earn 1 Airpoint Dollar per $100 spent, the American Express Airpoints Card offers many benefits with zero cost. Basics: Annual Fee: $0 Annual percentage interest rate: 0% p.a. for the first 6 months then 19.95% p.a. Interest Free Period: up to 55 days Bonus Offer: 50 Airpoints if you apply online, are approved, and spend $750 within the first 3 months. This offer is available to new Card Members only. Best Credit Card for Rental Car Excess Cover (and Numerous Other Benefits)Car rental can be cheap, but getting the excess down from $2,500 to $0 can cost as much as $30 a day. If you're hiring a car for a week, that's well over $200. While initiatives from the likes of Southern Cross have introduced 'domestic' travel insurance, there are credit cards which offer an 'insurance for car insurance excess', and American Express leads the way in this field.
To avoid all this cost and hassle, one popular credit card offers comprehensive car rental excess protection - the American Express Airpoints Platinum Our view:
The deal: Annual Fee: $195 Airpoints or Membership Rewards? Airpoints Annual percentage interest rate: 19.95% p.a. Interest Free Period: up to 55 days Bonus Offer: 300 bonus Airpoints Dollars when you apply, are approved and spend $1,500 on your new Card within the first 3 months. New Card Members only. Be aware: To spend enough to cover the annual fee, you'll need to charge around $11.500 (to earn 195 Airpoints Dollars), or, on average, around $1,000 a month.
Benefits include:
Important: As per the terms of the policy, you can claim on your car rental excess up to twice in a 12-month period. This means if you rent a car and have a chipped windscreen in March and, on another trip, experience a collision in October, you'll be at your limit. However, for most drivers, this should be more than sufficient.

Best Debit Card for Minimal Foreign Exchange FeesThe Wise, formerly TransferWise debit card lets you track your spending in real time, converts at the best exchange rate with super low fees, and is free for life.
Why we like it? Using the card is akin to how banking in the future will likely be. You don't get statements, you don't get mail or promotions - instead, you get a live feed of all your purchases on your app, zero annual fees, super-low foreign exchange fees and the ability to open up local and international bank accounts all linked to the one card. We're huge fans of the simplicity and transparency this debit card offers. Basics:
