Black Friday started as a US holiday, which marks the ‘unofficial’ start of the holiday season. It’s the day Americans deemed the most important day to start their holiday shopping because once Thanksgiving hit, the holiday season flew. Americans used to call in sick the day after Thanksgiving just to get a head start on their holiday shopping. It quickly became known as ‘Black Friday’ because it was the one day each year that every retailer could be ‘in the black,’ aka make a profit.

When is Black Friday in New Zealand?
This year, Black Friday is on November 28, 2025. Most New Zealand stores offer their rock-bottom prices in-store and online. All online deals start at midnight, but some large retailers have been known to release the deals early, so keep your eyes out the entire week of Black Friday.
If you prefer to shop in-store, sales start at the start of business on the same day. Some stores’ sales last one day, while others go through the weekend or while supplies last.
